
Only a small proportion of the land, between 13% and 16%, is arable.
Rural land holding patterns, as a result of these geographical influences, have always been dominated by small family-controlled plots of land (rather than large estates or manors). These small fields constitute an agricultural pattern dating back at least to the eighth century and one which even today continues to dominate rural life.
